How to avoid overindulging on holiday

It can be all to easy to let all your hard work go out of the the window once you go on your holiday..

I’m going to give you some tips to keep yourself on track and still have a great time without feeling like you are missing out.

I am a mum of 2, so when we go on holiday it can be a bit chaotic.  As mums we have to pack for everyone including hubby and if it’s a self catering caravan, you have to think of everything except the kitchen sink quite literally.

So it is understandable that the last items on your mind to pack is your gym gear.

I do though, now that might be something to do with the fact that I work in the fitness industry so it’s part of every day life for me to fit in a workout, but it might also be because I have gone on holiday in the past without the workouts and felt worse off, for sure.

We’ve all been there and tried a last minute crash diet in a bid to feel better in our bikinis then go on holiday and feel awesome, to come home and have undone all that hard work after too many sangrias… and we’re back to square one feeling uncomfy in our tight jeans.

Follow these 5 tips to keep yourself feeling awesome and rocking your bikini

Here are my 5 tips to keep you on track:

 1.  Ditch any ideas of doing crash diets before you go away.

What you want to be doing, is looking at ways to improve your eating habits that are maintainable for the long term.  That way you won’t do any damage to your metabolism and it will be easier while on holiday to stick to your new eating habits.  One example could be drinking 2-4 litres of water per day.

2.   Pack your gym gear.

I know, it sounds obvious but you have to set the intention of exercising while you are away before you go.  You have to get your mind ready for the idea that you will be fitting in a few short workouts while you are away.  You’re packing you gym stuff and you will be working out.

3.   Assess your surroundings.

As soon as I arrive at my holiday destination, I want to know where the gym is.  If there is no gym where can I go for a run.  If I can’t go for a run.  Where can I fit in my workout in my caravan, hotel room or where ever it might be.  So along with finding the park for the kids and the bar for hubby, I find a workout space for me.  Believe me I have fit workouts into tiny hotel rooms and caravan deckings before now.

4.   Keep your workouts short.

You can get a good workout done in 20 minutes thats including warm up and cool down.  Pick 4 exercises and set your timer. Now do each exercise for 40 secs and rest for 20 sec.  Now, repeat that twice more to give you a 12 minute workout.   You can do this 3-5 times per week depending on what you’re already used to doing at home and what activities you do on holiday.  If you go on a 4K walk up a fell in the lake district, I don’t need to fit  a workout into that day for example.  However if the plan is to have a pool day in sunny Spain for example, then you can plan an early morning workout before it gets too hot.

5.  Stick to your healthy eating habits but do make time for your favourite treats.

Yes, you are on holiday and yes it’s ok to have the occasional ice cream with the kids. Just don't have an ice-cream every day.  Stick to drinking plenty of water and when it comes to eating out. Enjoy yourself, eat your favourite foods and have a cocktail, you are on holiday. Just don’t over indulge.  If you keep up with your workouts, you will burn away those extra calories.

So to round up

If you eat healthily before you go away and keep up the same habits while away, with a few treats thrown in. Pack your gym gear with the intention of working out and when you arrive find out where you’ll be fitting in these workouts and keep them short.  You’ll be well on your way to staying on track while on holiday and returning with your Summer Glow.
